New approaches are addressing the challenges and opportunities of turning our linear \u201cthrow-away\u201d society into a Circular Economy, in which recycling processes form the basis of a sustainable production.<\/p>\n<p>These are the core elements of the Horizon 2020 projects <strong>Carbon4PUR<\/strong> and <strong>CO<sub>2<\/sub>EXIDE<\/strong>. The aim is to reuse carbon from <strong>CO and CO<sub>2<\/sub> as a raw material for the synthesis of epoxides and polyurethanes<\/strong>. Utilising off-gas from a steel plant or a biogas plant as feedstock, the projects follow two different conversion paths and target complementary end products on the pathway to alternative plastics production based on carbon recycling.<\/p>\n<p>In the joint symposium <em>\u201cSustainable Plastics \u2013 Joining CCU, Circular Economy and Power-to-X for better Polymers\u201d<\/em> the <strong>projects\u2019 main results <\/strong>will be presented, thus showcasing the potential of a comprehensive linkage between EU-funded research.<\/p>\n<p>After having been compelled to postpone the planned joint event in Aachen last year, you are now gladly and warmly invited to participate in the online symposium.<\/p>\n<p>The symposium will start with a keynote of <strong>S\u00f8ren B\u00f8wadt<\/strong> (European Commission) who will outline the current funding policy in the <strong>Green Deal and Horizon Europe<\/strong> programmes, thus relating the research topic of the two Horizon 2020 projects to the European future goals. <strong>Michael Carus<\/strong> (nova institute) will elucidate the <strong>Renewable Carbon Strategy<\/strong> that proposes the combined use of biomass, CO<sub>2<\/sub> utilisation and recycling for sustainable production chains.<\/p>\n<p>Framed by statements of their <strong>board members<\/strong>, the <strong>consortium partners<\/strong> of Carbon4PUR and CO<sub>2<\/sub>EXIDE will then give a detailed <strong>overview on the central outcomes of their research<\/strong> efforts, also including regulative measures, social acceptance as well as sustainable electricity and feedstock supply as enablers for a future carbon-neutral process industry.<\/p>\n<p>The symposium will end with a <strong>panel discussion<\/strong> with <strong>Walter Leitner<\/strong> (MPI-CEC \/ RWTH Aachen University), <strong>Maximilian Fleischer<\/strong> (Siemens Energy), <strong>Sophie Wilmet<\/strong> (CEFIC), <strong>Carmine Marzano<\/strong> (European Commission) and <strong>Florian Ausfelder<\/strong> (DECHEMA) about the demands and next steps towards a circular European industry.<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><strong>Date<\/strong>: Thursday, March 25<sup>th<\/sup> 2021, 10.00 a.m. &#8211; 4.30 p.m.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Location<\/strong>: Online<\/li>\n<li><strong>Costs<\/strong>: Free of charge.
