SUMMARY:CLIB forum event "Catalysing Alliances for Greener Products"
DESCRIPTION:The development of sustainable and resource-saving processes is a major focus of R&D&I work\, also supported heavily by the European Commission as part of the Green Deal and the sustainability efforts. Four international research projects\, all funded via the EU Horizon2020 framework\, are currently exploring the utilisation of enzymes in a variety of industrial applications to make our products greener.\n\nWithin the project HiPerIn 2.0\, CLIB is looking at industry sectors which could benefit from a structural change away from fossil-based towards biotechnological processes based on renewable substrates. The targeted product groups combine high functionality\, designable product properties\, and a high added value. We are focusing on five targeted sectors: Textiles & Fibres\, Coatings & Adhesives\, Personal & Home Care\, Food & Feed\, and Flavours & Fragrances.\n\nWe are happy to dedicate our annual end-of-year December forum to the four EU-funded projects FuturEnzyme\, EnXylaScope\, OXIPRO and RADICALZ\, giving them a platform to present their concept and selected scientific results with a high linkage towards industrial applications to an interested international audience.\n\nIn this CLIB online forum event\, you will hear from researchers and experts about the opportunities and challenges in the development and production of novel enzymes which will revolutionise common consumer products. A detailed programme will be published in the following days on this event site.\n\nParticipation is free\, but you will need to register via RSVP.\n\nAgenda CLIB Forum Green Products

SUMMARY:Cellulose Fibres Conference
DESCRIPTION:Cellulose fibres are among the winners of the European “Single-Use Plastics Directive (SUPD)”\, which has been in effect since July 2021 and entails plastic bans for a variety of single-use products. Cellulose is the main component of plant cell walls and a natural polymer. As a result\, disposable products made of cellulose and cellulose fibres are not labelled as plastic and are explicitly excluded from the regulation. The success story of cellulose fibres will thus continue at a rapid pace with new developments and applications. \nBuilding on the success of this year’s conference with 200 participants\, the International Conference on Cellulose Fibres 2022 will again cover the entire value chain\, from lignocellulose\, chemical pulp\, cellulose fibres such as rayon\, viscose\, modal or lyocell and new developments to a wide range of applications: Textiles of all kinds\, nonwovens such as wet wipes and new areas such as composites or nanocellulose in the food industry. All these sectors have gained considerable momentum in recent years. \nCellulose fibres have been a success story within the textile market with a compound annual growth rate (CAGR) between 5 and 10 % over the last ten years and similar growth rates are expected in the coming decade. This makes cellulosic fibres the fastest growing fibre group in the textile industry and also the largest investment sector in the global bioeconomy.  The challenge now is to achieve a balance between the ongoing capacity expansion and the growing demand\, to avoid overcapacity while still meeting rising demand from the major brands. These high growth rates are driven by the increased demand for natural fibres (and bottlenecks in cotton production)\, the microplastic issues\, and bans on plastics in disposable applications. All three factors will continue to play an important role in the development of the sector in the future. \n  \nMain focus of the conference: \n– What are the latest technology and market trends? \n– What are the future market dynamics? Who is active and interested in the cellulose fibre sector? \n– What are the biggest challenges in developing new value chains and growing market demand? \n– What ecosystems and partnerships are needed to promote innovation in line with new market requirements? \n– How will the political environment develop in the future? \n– What is the impact of plastic bans on single-use products? The avoidance of microplastics and the transformation from fossil to renewable raw materials? \n– How can the sustainability of cellulose fibre production be further improved? \n– Which alternative raw materials for cellulose fibres are suitable and available? \n

DESCRIPTION:  \nThe project Circular-Bio (INTERREG V A – Projekt Netzwerk zirkuläre Bioökonomie) organizes in cooperation with the HiPerIn 2.0 project (High Performance Ingredients) two events about protein transition with the goal to share knowledge through guest speakers\, exchange knowledge between participants and create the opportunity for new initiatives and ideas to emerge between different people / companies. \nPart 1\, online event: The future of alternative proteins – Meeting the experts\nDate: 5 April 2022 \nTime: 03:00 p.m. – 04:30 p.m. \nLocation: Online \nEvent Language: English \nThe first event is all about sharing knowledge. A team of experts will share their knowledge in some major subthemes in Protein – Transition.  The webinar is started with a key-note broad introduction of the Protein-Transition in general. \n\n\n\n\nBuilding bridges beyond borders for a sustainable protein sufficiency\n\n\n\n\nProgramme:\n\n\n\n14:45\nOpen to log in\n\n\n15:00\nWelcome / Start event\n\n\n15:10\nJeroen Willemsen\, Protein commissioner of The Netherlands – Key Note\n\n\n15:30\nChange of speaker\n\n\n15:35\nTheo Verleun\, Insect valley Europe – Insects – The contribution of insects to our future diet\n\n\n15:50\nChange of speaker\n\n\n15:55\nProf. Luc J.C. van Loon\, Department of Human Biology Maastricht University Medical Centre – Health – Alternative proteins\, how do they work?\n\n\n16:10\nChange of speaker\n\n\n16:15\nBrad Vanstone – Willicroft\, Plant based cheese – Plant proteins and their benefits\n\n\n16:30\nChange of speaker\n\n\n16:35\nPeter Rowe – High Tech Proteins / Deep Branch Bio – Revolutionary protein opportunities\n\n\n16:50\nEnd of the event\n\n\n\nThe link for the online event will be e-mailed to registered visitors one day before the event.\n\nSubthemes: \nHealth – Alternative proteins\, how do they work? \nProteins play a fundamental role in living beings\, as they are macronutrients required for the functioning of the body. There are many and various functions of proteins\, but how do the different types of proteins behave in the human body? \nInsects – The contribution of insects to our future diet \nThe search for alternative sources of protein continues unabated. A possible protein resource could come from insects. But what exactly is the nutritional composition of these insects and are there additional advantages and/or disadvantages in using insects as a source of protein? Which insects can we use\, and how can they be used in feed and / or food? \nPlant protein – Plant proteins and their benefits \nProtein plants are crops with a high protein content. They can serve as an alternative to animal proteins.  The increase in the market demand for vegetable proteins for many products can offer a new opportunity for agriculture. Non-traditional crops can therefore (as rotational crops) be given a chance within the traditional agricultural plan. It is because of the quality of protein crops (leguminous plants\, which fix nitrogen from the air) that several positive sustainability effects can be expected (restriction of nitrogen problems\, contribution to reducing soya imports\, etc.)\, which can once again contribute to a sustainable business model for the farmer. \nRevolutionary proteins – Revolutionary protein opportunities \nNext to using crops or insects as new resources for proteins\, highly innovative technologies and routes are being developed for extracting and / or winning proteins out a huge variety of sources. Varying from plant-based extraction technologies to unique technologies for producing proteins\, even out of CO2. \n\nPlease register here for part 2.

SUMMARY:Fantastic enzymes: Where and how to find them
DESCRIPTION:The agenda and short abstracts of the presentations are now available and can be downloaded here. \nThe development of sustainable and resource-saving processes is a major focus of R&D&I work\, also supported heavily by the European Commission as part of the Green Deal and the sustainability efforts. In this context\, biotechnology is already acting as a facilitator to achieve a circular economy and a bioeconomy. With CLIB’s involvement\, the EU-funded project FuturEnzyme is trying to achieve big goals with the identification\, optimisation\, production and application of innovative enzymes to support the transformation of various industrial sectors and their consumer products. Within the project HiPerIn 2.0\, CLIB is looking at cross-cutting issues that could support different industry sectors in a structural change away from fossil-based towards biotechnological processes. We are looking forward to presenting the competences and topics we acquire or work on in FuturEnzyme to an interested international audience. With this CLIB Forum event\, we want to emphasise and promote the need for collaboration between researchers\, entrepreneurs and manufacturers for a greener and more sustainable future. Furthermore\, policy makers\, funding bodies\, investors and consumers are happily invited to join this event. \nThe FuturEnzyme project partners CSIC\, Barcelona Supercomputing Center and the University of Hamburg will present their activities in the project and beyond. Participation is free\, but you will need to register via RSVP (Click “Going” on the left side). The registration is open from now on until 04 September 2022. \nThe meeting link will be sent to all registered participants on 05 September. \n

SUMMARY:Circular Economy Hotspot
DESCRIPTION:Since 2016\, the annual summit of international companies\, political actors and experts in the field of Circular Economy has taken place in locations such as the Netherlands\, Luxembourg\, Scotland or Belgium. At these hotspots\, presentations are held over several days and excursions to good examples of companies were made in order to get to know showcase examples and projects and to exchange ideas. In September 2022\, the hotspot will come to North Rhine-Westphalia\, Bottrop! It will be organised by the city of Bottrop together with the research project Prosperkolleg and supported by the NRW Ministry of Economics. The event is seen as an opportunity to make the complex topic of the circular economy tangible for a large target group. In this way\, the long-term opportunities in the region of circular strategies are to be demonstrated. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n

SUMMARY:BIO.NRW Information Event on Horizon Europe - New Calls for Proposals
DESCRIPTION:  \nThe European Commission has just informed the delegations of the Program Committee on Cluster 1\, Health about the planned call topics in the work program for 2023-2024. The new calls are expected to be published in December 2022. The first submission deadlines are already planned for April 2023. Compared to the previous calls\, there will be some changes in 2023 – 2024. In order to inform you very up-to-date\, BIO.NRW offers this funding event (in German). \nIn the context of this event\, the (potential) call contents for Cluster 6\, Bioeconomy and Environment\, will be in focus in addition to the topic of health. \nIn addition\, we will provide an insight into the support measures of the European Innovation Council (EIC) for all those interested in founding a company\, as well as for start-ups and SMEs. The EIC unites many measures for innovation support\, for which the applicants can choose the topics themselves for the most part. The four important instruments EIC Pathfinder\, EIC Transitions\, EIC Accelerator as well as the EIC Awards offer a lot of room for interdisciplinary ideas. \nFurther information in German can be found here (https://bio.nrw.de/wp-content/uploads/2022/08/Foerdermittel_Programm_2022_f.pdf)

SUMMARY:European Cluster Conference 2022
DESCRIPTION:The Czech Ministry for Industry and Trade under the Czech Presidency of the Council of the EU and the European Commission are pleased to announce the organisation of the 8th edition of the European Cluster Conference on 26 and 27 September 2022 in Prague (CZ). Organised with the support of the European Cluster Collaboration Platform (ECCP)\, this event is a unique opportunity as it brings together cluster policy makers\, cluster managers\, practitioners and other stakeholders. \nAfter a fully virtual edition in 2020\, this year edition is the opportunity for the cluster community to meet again physically in Prague. Do not miss this opportunity to reconnect with your peers and get to know new clusters or cluster managers in person. \nThis event is following the cycle of European Cluster Conferences that have taken place every two years since 2008\, every time with a different theme enabling participants to focus on different priorities. \nJust before the European Cluster Conference 2022\, a Matchmaking event will be held in a physical format on 26 September 2022 (morning). This event will gather cluster organisations – to explore trade\, investment and partnering opportunities and to develop connections between Europe’s value chains and ecosystems.
