SUMMARY:BioSC International Summer School 2024: Alternative Proteins - Challenges and Chances
DESCRIPTION:Proteins are a central and essential part of food and feed. Very often they are made of animal products like meat\, milk\, or eggs\, with a high impact on the environment\, like greenhouse gas emissions\, pollution and extensive land use. But there are alternatives which require much lesser inputs for example of land and water. This includes plant- or algae-based and fermentation-derived proteins. Fungi and insects can serve as alternative protein sources as well. \nThe use of all of them goes hand in hand with new and optimised ways of producing and processing the raw materials. In the case of plants\, proteins are mostly used directly as food and require little processing. Other protein sources need to be broken down and processed to a much greater extent\, depending on their utilisation. For example\, they can be used to produce a substitute for animal products with similar or even the same ingredients and properties or they can be highly processed to a very pure protein or even amino acids for industrial use. \nIn the International BioSC Summer School “Alternative proteins – Challenges and Chances” you will learn about the different sources and processing methods regarding alternative proteins. DESCRIPTION:About Trilateral Chemical Region \nIn the heart of the Netherlands\, Flanders\, and North Rhine-Westphalia lies 40% of Europe’s dynamic chemical industry. In this pivotal moment\, as the industry undergoes a remarkable shift towards sustainability and circular practices\, our regions witness a surge in novel developments\, particularly in alternative raw materials (such as recycled carbon\, biobased\, CO/CO2) and innovative processes (e.g.\, electrochemistry\, plasma technology). \nThe ‘Trilateral strategy for the chemical industry’ is a cross-border cooperation between the Netherlands\, Flanders and North Rhine-Westphalia. In September 2017\, the ministries of economics of this three regions presented a joint vision and strategy on the future improvement of this flagship industry. To strengthen the innovation and competitiveness of the chemical industry in this region\, a comprehensive joint industry-government partnership between these three regions has been established with active participation of essenscia Flanders\, VNCI (Netherlands) and our member VCI NRW. \nAbout the event \nThis unique matching event is tailored for those pioneering new knowledge and insights that have matured to a point where they are ripe for application on a pilot/demo scale (TRL 5+).
