With more than 180 participants from industry, science, and policy, this year\u2019s\u00a0twoday\u00a0CIC Conference took place in D\u00fcsseldorf under the motto\u00a0<\/span>\u201cIntegrating Biotech \u2013 novel feedstocks, technologies and markets.\u201d<\/span><\/i>\u00a0The event focused on how biotechnological innovations can be integrated into new feedstocks, technologies, and markets, as well as\u00a0on the role of regulatory and economic frameworks enabling this transition.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

The conference opened with three political impulses from North\u00a0RhineWestphalia, the federal level, and the EU, setting important strategic accents. Ina Brandes<\/strong>, Minister for Culture and Science in NRW, highlighted the role of industrial biotechnology in driving economic transformation and pointed to key regional projects and infrastructures. Max Kroymann<\/strong>\u00a0(Head of\u00a0Division\u00a0\u201cBioeconomy; Biotech and Food Industries\u201d,\u00a0BMWE)\u00a0emphasised the growing importance of biotechnology in Germany and outlined current developments in funding programmes and strategic initiatives. Maarit Nyman<\/strong>\u00a0(EU, Senior Expert\u00a0on Industrial Bioeconomy, DG GROW)\u00a0provided insights into European efforts to strengthen the biotechnology sector and underscored the need for an\u00a0innovationfriendly\u00a0environment.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

The program then shifted towards scientific and industrial perspectives. Two impressive keynote talks by Simon\u00a0Klaffl<\/strong>\u00a0and Peter Seeberger<\/strong> offered a comprehensive overview of current developments and future directions in biotechnology and the chemical industry. They highlighted\u00a0cutting-edge\u00a0strategies for scaling biotechnological processes as well as overarching concepts for the sustainable transformation of the chemical sector.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

The following sessions then explored the\u00a0<\/span>integration of AI into biotechnological processes and the use of novel gaseous carbon feedstocks with significant industrial potential. Discussions addressed how\u00a0datadriven\u00a0models can shorten development cycles and how barriers to adopting gaseous feedstocks in biotech processes can be overcome. The day concluded with an engaging panel discussion on how biotechnology can successfully reach the market, addressing factors such as scaleup challenges, investment conditions, and regulatory considerations.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

The second conference day opened with an inspiring keynote by Lukas\u00a0<\/strong><\/span>Reisky<\/span><\/strong>, who presented Covestro\u2019s biotechnology activities<\/span>\u00a0setting<\/span>\u00a0the stage for a discussion on integrated production concepts and the embedding of biotechnological processes within chemical parks. The sessions\u00a0<\/span>highlighted<\/span>\u00a0the importance of infrastructure, resource-sharing, and flexible production concepts for the industrial deployment of biotechnology. The\u00a0<\/span>subsequent<\/span>\u00a0session focused on<\/span>\u00a0emerging applications and future markets<\/span>\u00a0\u2013\u00a0<\/span>from innovative materials to platform chemicals<\/span>\u00a0\u2013\u00a0<\/span>offering concrete examples of how research advances are being translated into practice.<\/span><\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n
