Insights from the CLIB Strategy Retreat 2026

Four years after the last CLIB Strategy Retreat, members of the Advisory Board and Extended Board came together in Essen on 12 August 2026 to take a step back and reflect on the future direction of the network.

The retreat provided an opportunity to assess how the external environment has changed and what these developments mean for CLIB and its members. In recent years, economic uncertainty, rapid technological developments, shifting global value chains, and increasing geopolitical tensions have created new challenges and opportunities for the bioeconomy. Against this backdrop, participants discussed how CLIB can continue to create value for its members while supporting the transition towards a sustainable bioeconomy.

The discussions focused on CLIB’s strategic pillars and explored how the network’s activities and services can evolve to address future needs. Constructive debates and open exchanges helped identify areas where CLIB can further strengthen its role as a connector, enablor, and voice of the industrial biotechnology and bioeconomy community. In addition to established strategic priorities, participants addressed emerging topics of growing relevance, including artificial intelligence, resilience, defence-related aspects, and advocacy, as well as their implications for innovation ecosystems and industrial competitiveness. The discussions explored how these developments may shape the future landscape in which CLIB and its members operate and how the cluster can respond to changing conditions.

 

 

 

 

 

 

The outcomes of the retreat will now be translated into concrete actions and strategic priorities for the coming years. The insights generated during the discussions will help ensure that CLIB remains a strong, relevant, and valuable partner for its members while continuing to advance industrial biotechnology and the bioeconomy.
