About Triple-S

Biotechnology has a key role to play in solving the major challenges of our time and finding the path to a sustainable, bio-based circular economy. In view of the urgency of this transformation, innovations and technologies that not only exist as a concept but in which biotechnology can already make a tangible difference today are particularly relevant.

The Triple-S project therefore aims to identify, support, and transfer such biotechnological and bio-based technologies in order to realise a future-proof, climate and environmentally friendly economy in North Rhine-Westphalia.

The technological Triple-S criteria based on Sustainable, Smart & Scalable, define whether a technology can fundamentally make a difference in the upcoming transformation. Whether this technology ultimately makes a difference as an innovation is additionally dependent on other external factors. Through the criteria-based assessment of technologies in terms of their impact potential for transformation, Triple-S goes beyond previous projects and activities of CLIB. The added value for the stakeholders in NRW consists particularly in the support for the classification of their innovation projects and in the demonstration of the potential of biotechnology, especially for economic sectors that have not yet been activated.

Project realisation

In concrete terms, Triple-S will first create a catalogue of criteria for the classification of technologies and innovation approaches in order to give actors in NRW an orientation for the evaluation of their technologies. The aim here is to enable researchers and those interested in start-ups to consider the relevant questions for evaluating their invention right from the start – are they sustainable, smart & scalable? Do the external factors allow the technology to be brought to market as an innovation? This should serve to focus the innovative power of companies and research institutions at the location on projects that have a high potential for successful transformation towards a bio-based circular economy. Here, the focus is particularly on addressing groups of actors and economic sectors in NRW that have not yet tapped into the potential of the bioeconomy and must first be activated.

Technologies that meet the required criteria and thus have a high potential for transformation in NRW are subsequently supported according to need. This support concerns the mediation of relevant partners, the formation of consortia and the search for financing opportunities for projects through private and public funds. In this way, CLIB will show paths how technologies can overcome hurdles on the way to innovation and use enablers. Promising innovations will be individually supported in scaling up to make a difference. One big goal is also to transfer biotech opportunities to new industries. In this way, Triple-S will make a decisive contribution to making NRW a sustainable, climate-neutral and attractive pioneer in the bioeconomy.
