Innovator’s Compass

Our Innovator’s Compass “Evaluating Impactful Solutions in Bioeconomy”  aims to help young inventors recognise the potential of their invention and to stack all cards in their favour to realise their progress into impactful innovations.

Each chapter highlights questions which inventors should consider during their journey towards a market-ready innovation. Our goal is to help you avoid having to say “I don’t know” when talking to that key customer or investor. Thanks to the Innovator’s Compass, you will be able to clearly argue why your innovation will be smart, sustainable, and scalable. You will also not be surprised by questions on where you stand in a value network, your market position, applicable regulations, and your human resources.

New in 2025: a chapter on financing biotech innovations will give you a handy overview of the most common, and some less common, financing options.

The Innovator’s Compass is based on intensive desk-research, minutes of our Triple-S events, discussions with experts, as well as co-creation workshops.

We value to your feedback    – what was helpful, what do we need to improve?

Innovator’s Compass 2nd edition

Feb 2025 – out now:
New: second edition with added chapter “Financing Biotech Innovations”

We are grateful to all experts who provided input during our events and the co-creation workshops in 2024 and 2025.

About Triple-S

Biotechnology is one of the key technologies enabling industry to transform itself from relying on fossil-based resources to utilising renewable, natural feedstocks. This defossilisation will be essential to realise a climate-neutral economy, in which our society can enjoy prosperity within planetary boundaries.

The innovations necessary to realise this transformation are challenging, but many inventions are already there. These need to be identified, supported, and brought to the market to they can make an impact. We call those Triple-S Innovations: innovations which are smart, sustainable, and scalable.  The Triple-S project aims to support them to realise a future-proof, climate-neutral, and economically successful North Rhine-Westphalia (NRW).

Project realisation

During the course of the project, we first defined criteria to identify Triple-S Innovations – what makes them smart, sustainable, and scalable? Which other, non-technological criteria play a role, either supporting or hindering their impact? Experts from our CLIB network and beyond helped us for example in our kick-off event, or our annual co-creation workshops. With these inputs, we were able to refine our methodology and write our Innovator’s Compass. We regularly scout for new technologies and innovations, by attending events and networking across sectors. In our events, such as the CLIB International Conference CIC or our CILB- webinars, we focus on specific topics or sectors we discover, and shine a light on their innovations.

Once a year, we organise a SME & Start-up Pitching Event @CLIB, where young entrepreneurs can pitch their innovation to investors and industry experts and get valuable feedback.
