Integrating Enzyme Technologies into EU Policy Frameworks

The FuturEnzyme project has, together with its sister projects from the European Cluster “Enzymes for Greener Products“, recently published a Policy Brief on:

Integrating Enzyme Technologies into EU Policy Frameworks

The document describes not only the potential enzymes and enzyme technologies provide for establishing a sustainable bioeconomy facing global SDGs. It also addresses policy makers to review and overcome current regualtory barriers for enzyme innovations in Europe, such as REACH and SSbD. The key statements are as follows:

  • Enzyme technologies are essential enablers of sustainable innovation
  • Current EU regulations, especially under REACH, create barriers to enzyme adoption
  • Safe and Sustainable by Design (SSbD) frameworks must better integrate sustainability
  • Policy support and regulatory streamlining are urgently needed
  • Investing in enzyme technologies will strengthen EU industrial competitiveness
